Philip Proffitt was a larger than life character who was loved by many and will be missed by many. He was a kind and thoughtful man who lived life to it's fullest.
Born to Mary Ellen and Geoffrey Proffitt on November 17th 1945 in Bolton. Philip was their second child, their first being his beloved brother Geoff. Philip had a fun and loving upbringing with his family and had many wonderful stories that he enjoyed sharing often involving the antics him and his brother got up to. At age 11, dad was sent to boarding school at Denstone College in Staffordshire, which he enjoyed immensely. It is there that he developed a passion for all sports. When he left Denstone he decided on being a vet but this was short lived as he didn't enjoy having to put down animals and his career path changed.
For a few years after school, Philip had a variety of occupations and attended a textile college in Bolton where he met many friends that he still holds dear to him. He started his career in textiles at London Textiles Testing House. After a sudden illness with his father, he was asked to join the family business which he accepted. He worked in the family business, Proffitts of Bolton, from 1971 to 2007.
Philip married the love of his life, Elaine Martin, on the 26th October 1970 in Bearsden, Scotland. Philip and Elaine had known each other since childhood. Their fathers served together in Egypt during the war and became best friends. They had many happy memories growing up together. Although it must be said, at the beginning his advances were spurned. Thankfully in the end all of his efforts paid off and they became an item. From this happy marriage five children were born - Shona, Helen, Martin, Sarah and Matthew. All the children were married and produced eleven wonderful grandchildren who Philip cherished. Family was most important to Philip.
Philip will be held dear in our hearts until it our time to join him. As a family we have many, many joyful memories. Too many to mention! We have created this obituary for friends and family to share photos, music, condolences and memories that you hold dear. We look forward to reading your thoughts and well wishes. Philip was a wonderful man and will be deeply missed. We cherish our time with him that we were blessed with.
